There is something absurd about the pavement– this vast artificial structure that covers up the earth. In its absurdity it attracts wits, wags and creative road workers, who make jokes to amuse their immediate audience of mates and bemuse a future audience of passing strangers. But when graffitists tamper with official signs they are resisting authority; behind every joke there is always an objection to some imposition.
