Surveyors from utility companies are the true graffiti vandals of the pavement. Their fluoro diagrams warn that the street is going to be dug up. They are reminders that the pavement is the roof over a busy underground world of pipes, wires and tunnels. Manhole covers are the skylights in this roof. Their cast iron embossing preserves the history of successions of utilities.
